  • 25th Annniversary Of The Field Of Corn (With Osage Oranges

Field of Corn (with Osage Oranges) 4995 Rings Rd, Dublin
Dublin Arts Council Executive Director David S. Guion announced today that the public is invited to a celebration for the 25th anniversary of Field of Corn (with Osage Oranges), a public artwork by Columbus sculptor Malcolm Cochran, Saturday, Sept. 28 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Dublin’s Frantz Park, 4995 Rings Rd. The now-iconic artwork was installed in 1994, to initial mixed reviews from the public.
“Field of Corn with Osage Oranges is a fantastic example of site-specific artwork,” explained Guion. “As visitors began to understand the underlying themes that the artist used to tell a story, the community came to embrace the artwork. Today, it is one of the most photographed public art installations in the collection.”
The artist will be on hand during the celebration of the 109 six-foot-high ears of concrete corn, sited on land that was once the farm of Sam Frantz, a pioneer in the hybridization of corn.
The celebration will take the form of a birthday party and focuses on play, explains Guion. It marks the first event in a three-part Discovery Series, a component of Dublin Arts Council’s new Art & Wellness initiative.
“Canadian doctors are prescribing museum visits, Scottish doctors are prescribing time spent in nature and U.K. doctors are prescribing arts activities ranging from playing instruments to taking dance or voice lessons,” said Guion. “This trend of ‘social prescribing’ recognizes a clear link between the arts and wellness, and as a result, we are exploring the issue with a host of community partners.”
Each Art & Wellness Discovery Series event will have a sub-theme – in this case, play – and will encompass visual art, sound and movement components. Initial collaborators, who will help shape the experiences, include Washington Township Fire & Emergency Medical Services, Syntero Counseling Centers, Dublin City Schools and several City of Dublin departments, including Police, Human Resources and Recreation Services.
The event will be appropriate for all ages and will be offered free of charge. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
