The Kyoto Calligraphy Lessons: Printmaking By Nicholas Hill

Dublin Arts Council 7125 Riverside Dr, Dublin
The exhibition The Kyoto Calligraphy Lessons: Printmaking by Nicholas Hill will be on view at Dublin Arts Council, in Dublin Aug. 4 through Sept. 11, by appointment only, featuring artwork inspired by the artist’s experiences in Japan.
The exhibition includes several series of work, including the title series “Kyoto Calligraphy Lessons” which employs loosely painted cyanotype chemicals as one form of gestural mark. Imagery and text, discovered and photographed during the artist’s travels, are embedded in the artwork. The choice of cyanotype, a 19th century photographic process, was prompted by its rich blue color that is similar to the blue achieved in the traditional Japanese dyeing technique, aizome.
